Home / How to Play / Do You Know How to Play 3 Card Poker?

Do you know how to play 3 card poker? Chances are, at least one of your friends does so you should probably learn. After all, it’s an extremely popular game that gets played at home and at the casino. If you learn some tips and tricks today, you could win big tomorrow.

How to play 3 card poker like a champ

Playing this card game isn’t difficult, nor is winning for that matter. There are different strategies to think about but the bigger picture is what we’re focused on today. Here’s the scoop so you can play like a shark:

  1. Know the rules. For example, you play the dealer directly and can win points, chips, or money even if you lose a hand.
  2. Understand the card rankings. That’s because 3-card poker sequences aren’t the same as standard Texas Hold ’em.
  3. Review the betting etiquette. Otherwise, you could end up losing a lot more than you bargained for.

The good news is that this game can be played at home or in a casino for cash. Casual competitions use scorecards in place of chips but the rules remain the same. In fact, sparring with friends can help you hone your skills and win more often.

To bet or not to bet: that is the question

Let's Work Together!

At some point, you’ll probably get the chance to play this game while betting chips or cash at a casino or party. When the opportunity arises, you’ll want to be prepared. So, these are the three betting types to understand before you start gambling:

  • Ante: This means you’re betting against the dealer, predicting your hand as the ultimate victor.
  • Pair Plus: With this one, you’re supposed to get a pair or better to win.
  • Dual: It’s the bet that says you’ll win it all: a better hand than the dealer and a pair or better.

You’ll have a chance to look at your cards, but you’ll have to place an ante if you want to play. And if you fold, you lose whatever ante you placed on the table. On the bright side, your successful Pair Plus bets give you a victory even if you lose the hand overall.

Do you know how to play 3 card poker at a casino?

Casino rules for 3 card poker are similar to standard poker but they can change depending on where you play. So, follow these three simple rules to prevent an unnecessary loss:

  1. Visit concierge for information on house rules. There, ask about special etiquette that could disqualify you from the game.
  2. Check the betting minimum before you sit down. That way, you don’t look like an idiot when you run out of money.
  3. Glance at your cards quickly and then leave them on the table. After all, this is the best way to stop rubber necks from peaking at your hand.

To keep yourself fresh, step away from the table after 3 or 4 rounds.

The takeaway

Knowing how to play 3 card poker isn’t as important as it is enjoyable. In fact, millions of casino patrons would agree and at-home card sharks would never argue.
