Home / Board Games / What You Need to Know about the Magic the Gathering Board Game

There are over 35 million people who enjoy playing the Magic the Gathering board game. Participants are spread over 70 different countries, with over $10 million in sales of branded materials. Games can be played on tabletops and through digital competitions, but why is it such a popular pastime? Here’s what you need to know.

What is the Magic the Gathering board game?

The original Magic the Gathering board game has been around for quite some time. There are millions of global fans and the cult following keeps getting bigger by the year. The game features challenging, customizable play scenarios that include epic spell castings and tactical combats. Meanwhile, the object is to defeat your opponent(s) in a free-for-all by chipping away at their life score total.

How do you play it?

You start the game as a Planeswalker. That means you get to summon armies, cast spells, and try to outsmart your enemies when it’s your turn. This is a game of strategy and patience, so try not to focus on a single opponent. Instead, launch an attack that’s complex and unpredictable.

The Magic the Gathering Board Game (Arena) is different from the card game. Both games use the same basic plot and premise, but you can’t trade cards in the board game. The only way to get useful MTG cards is by opening packs or using in-game rewards. Meanwhile, the best way to learn the ropes is by jumping into a casual game with friends.

NOTE: Magic the Gathering is a highly complex game with multiple in-depth options. Everyone gets confused at first.

Tips for making the Magic the Gathering Board Game more fun

Although MTG is difficult to master, players agree that it’s never too late to learn. The Magic the Gathering board game, Arena, is perhaps the best way to figure it all out. If you can grasp the overall concept and respect the rules, then you can have a ton of fun. Even better is the fact that it doesn’t take very long to play.

The average game lasts between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the number of players and the choices made on the board. You can gather 2 to 5 of your friends for a quick competition, but keep in mind that the game becomes more complex with every new player that joins. There are events and competitions happening all over the world at any given time.

This game isn’t just a ton of fun; it’s also surprisingly social and extremely difficult to win. Attending special events and joining tournaments can help mitigate the challenges. That’s where players can score free cards and rare prizes just for participating.

PRO TIP: Use an MTG Finder to locate competitions and casual gatherings in your area.

The takeaway

Although the Magic the Gathering board game features complex gameplay options and endless possibilities, it’s pretty easy to learn and play. Local competitions are a great place to find rare trading cards, exciting opportunities, and new friends. Just don’t forget to bring your game face because people tend to take MTG very seriously.
