How to Play Craps for the First Time

Home / How to Play / How to Play Craps for the First Time

You always have a better time at the casino when you know how to play Craps. It’s a fun game where you could win major bucks, plus you don’t have to be a genius to beat your opponents. But, there’s definitely a learning curve, so be careful.

How to play Craps: the basics

Playing Craps at a casino is easier than you think. In fact, that’s why it’s one of the most popular games in the world. Still, there are a few rules you have to know before starting. So, here are the basics.

The Object

The object of the game is to use chance in your favor. That means it takes no special talent or strategy to play or win Craps. All you have to do is predict the outcome of a dice roll. And if you make smart bets, you could win BIG.

The Betting

You simply place your bet on whichever dice combo you think will turn up. The more often your combination reveals itself, the more chips you receive. Also, there’s usually a wager minimum at a Craps table, so be sure to talk to the casino concierge.

The Players

The game consists of players called “shooters” and “pass bettors.” The shooter rolls the dice in a come-out roll to start the game. The pass bettors then win or lose the round based on their wagers.

Betting on Craps to win

As a shooter, it’s your job not to “seven out.” That means you can’t roll a 7 or a combination with a 7 in it. Meanwhile, pass bettors love to see 7s. In fact, they win the round if the shooter shoots a 7 or an 11. They lose if the shooter shoots a 2, 3, or 12. Everything else is considered a point number.

If the shooter rolls a point number, he or she has to keep rolling until one of the following things occurs:

  1. That same point number is rolled for a second time.
  2. The shooter “sevens out” and passes the buck to someone else.

Keep in mind that you can make dozens of different wagers in this game. However, Craps is designed around the pass line bet and a standard betting layout. So, be ready for the dealer to move your chips if you make bets outside that line.

How to play Craps for beginners

Whether you’re a seasoned vet or a beginner, there are a few ways to boost your chances of winning in Craps. For starters, remember this: shooters are called the Darkside, or the “Don’t Players.” Meanwhile, bettors are called the Rightside, or the “Do Players.” Also, neither side is very fond of the other.

FUN FACT: Nearly 95% of people end up being Rightside players because the odds are better over there.

Meanwhile, there are between 5 and 8 bets that have the lowest house edge. So, you can reduce the house’s advantage to 1.4% if you use your wagers wisely. Although Craps doesn’t necessarily require skills like baccarat or poker, there are still some strategies that could help you win bigger pots more often.
